The Third Party Option, or Why You Should Not Vote For the Lesser of Two Evils

Today, there are 40 days until the 2016 presidential election. As far as I know, America has never before faced our voting dilemma. I've heard plenty of people and pundits observe that our two candidates are despised almost as much by their own parties as by their opponents'. Most people seem to agree that whichever of the two gets elected will bring their own flavor of mayhem to "life as we know it." And so the prevailing logic is that good Americans should vote for "the lesser of two evils" as a way to mitigate the loss our country will inevitably suffer with November's decision.

So I want to light a beacon for my family and friends. We have a third option, an actually good option. But somehow I’ve heard very few people talking about it.

The third and best option is this: we should repent of our sins and ask God for mercy. I’d like to persuade you that repentance and pleading – not voting for a “lesser evil” – is the sole duty, privilege, and hope of every American citizen at this time.

No Less Evil.
Great pains have already been made by both sides to prove that "the other candidate" is evil. In this alone I think we have every reason to believe each side. But picking the "less evil" candidate is madness.

The truth is, when anyone chooses the lesser of two evils, they are, in fact, choosing evil.

Evil destroys. It does not destroy relative to other bad things; it destroys according to its kind. A man who lost his leg to a tumor could not comfort himself by saying he was better off than a man who lost his leg to a mortar. The outcome is the same for both men: they've been crippled by different kinds of evil, and their scars take due shape.

I find it chilling, then, that so many Christians believe they have to choose between a "lesser of two evils." I do not find this notion sanctioned anywhere in Scripture.  Both options are clearly evil, therefore both options should be avoided at all costs. Both options will devastate according to their kind. Would you prefer Jezebel or Nebuchadnezzar? Wisdom tells us, "Neither! I throw myself on the mercies of God."

King Amaziah.
In fact, the prophets and apostles condemn this sort of "devil's bargain" throughout the Scripture. Consider, as just one cherry-picked example, King Amaziah in 2 Chronicles 25. He had to face a vast army of Edomites who were idolatrous to the core. They were a horde of evil-doers that he didn't want to face alone. So in addition to his own army, he tried to guarantee his victory by hiring a massive Israelite army to stand with him in battle. Just one problem: the Israelites were also an evil horde of idolaters whose nation was under sharp indictment for having broken their marital vows to Yahweh (Hosea 2:2). But they were "less evil." Amaziah reasoned that the Ephraimites were  at least "the same kind of people" as his own tribe of Judah. They were literally family (albeit a corrupt part of the family).

Then God sent a prophet.

One brave, anonymous prophet said to King Amaziah, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the Lord is not with Israel, with all these Ephraimites. But go, act, be strong for the battle. Why should you suppose that God will cast you down before the enemy? For God has power to help or to cast down.”

But King Amaziah was concerned for his money, and said to the man of God, “But what shall we do about the hundred talents that I have given to the army of Israel?” The man of God answered, “The Lord is able to give you much more than this.”

What was the outcome? King Amaziah wisely listens, dismisses the lesser of the two evils, and defeats the Edomites in a smashing victory.

But then both evils come back to bite him. The Israelite army leaves Judah in a rage. For the insult of being un-hirable mercenaries, they sacked their own people's towns and killed 3,000 civilians on the way back home. And the evil Edomites, though weaker by sword, overpowered Judah by idols. Amaziah took the little statues that the dead men of Edom were no longer going to use, and he worshiped them in betrayal of the God who had given him victory of them in the first place. Lose-lose. His entanglement with both evils left him wounded on both sides.

So God dealt with him accordingly.

Ironically, God gave Amaziah into the hands of the "lesser evil" army he had once trusted in, and in the end he was taken as a prisoner of war by the King of Israel whom he had every reason to regard as family.

This is just one single story. The overwhelming evidence in the Bible shows that when evil pins you on both sides, you should scream for God and wait for Him. But under no circumstance does God delight when people choose evil. God prescribes death over acquiescence, because holy faith is life itself (Is 35:8-10, 2 Cor 7:1, Heb 11:35-38, 2 Pet 3:11, Jude 1:20, Rev 2:10).

Free to Vote, or to Repent?
Yet many Christians suppose we have a moral obligation to cast our support behind one of two immoral options. No, that's not true. Voting is Biblically justified, but not Biblically mandated. Humble repentance of sin, on the other hand, is heavily mandated and therefore supersedes the value of voting in every way. This is another reason good Christians should make odd Americans. We hold that voting is a theological privilege without being an imperative. Our democratic freedom certainly sprouted from the rich ground of Christianity, but that doesn't mean it is Biblically necessary. Voting isn't remotely essential to the Church's DNA, and the Lord can justly strip the privilege if repentance isn't in proper place. For this election, your patriotism would be better practiced by fasting and praying than by voting.

So we have the Egyptians attacking behind and the Sea to drown ahead -- which shall we choose? "Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent (Ex 14:13-14).” Faced with a sure sword on one side, and a flood of judgment on the other, Christians proclaim a third and glorious option: repentance that comes from faith in a merciful God

Let's be honest - you and I know that we have plenty to repent of. Nationally, we've blatantly trespassed the sacred Laws of Heaven with public applause (and plenty of debate). Our two candidates embody our country's treachery against our Creator. In our current path, we are indeed choosing our own judgment. 

So we ought to take a cue from Jonah and preach an honest repentance. We ought to take a cue from Nineveh who repented at Jonah's preaching. 

We should stop squabbling whether to drive the train down the track that goes off the cliff, or the track whose tunnel is collapsed. Otherwise, we're watching Rev 9:20-21 unfold before us. 

How, then, should we proceed? 

Out of the Booth and Onto Our Knees.
First and foremost, it is time for us to watch and pray, because we don't know what hour the Master returns. (Matt 24:44-51). This just happens to be the same thing the Church has done for 2,000 faithful years as she's looked with longing for her Husband. Our test for whether we've ever cared for our Father's work has always been the same for every Christian generation: did we hear His words and do them in full view of Christ’s coming? The clear choice we're facing now is not him or her; it is and always has been Ready or Not

As the apostle John put it when telling of Christ's hastening return, "Everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure (1 John 3:3)." This hope has a purging quality. Hoping for Jesus' return without voting will keep you a million times cleaner than voting for a "lesser evil" and hoping for the best.

Second, let's acknowledge that national repentance and personal repentance are indistinguishable. There's no such thing as America being broken-hearted for her sins unless I am broken-hearted for my sins. The nation-wide rush of repentance we should be praying for is impossible if my finger is pointed at someone else. To paraphrase the Proverb: humility, or doom (Prov. 16:18). Therefore, let us replace the sound of those professional nose-twisters on TV and fill our ears instead with the Word of God. Let us stop watching muck-rakers parade their enemies' failures and fill our eyes instead with tears and weeping for our people's many sins (which is the same as saying my many sins, Prov. 14:34).

Third, let's repent of our sins and turn to God. How do we do this? We need look no further than those public sins we've become hyper-aware of in the last year.

Have you been guilty of or indifferent to racism? Then turn to God and confess it, and go befriend your enemy.
Have you condoned or practiced abortion? Then turn to God and say you're sorry, and wash the baby blood off your hands into the redemptive blood of Jesus.
Have you practiced sexual immorality - whether privately or publicly? Then turn to God and see Him in whose image you were created, and know that He cares what you do with your body.
Have you been greedy, fed yourself while others starve, amassed debt and riches and clothes in the last days, loved money? Then turn to God and be as generous to the poor as He's been to you.
Have you made, and stared at, and bowed down to, and worshiped idols? Then turn away from those things that neither hear nor smell nor know, and turn to the one living God who alone is to be praised.
Have you been indifferent to or hostile to His holy Word? Then turn to Him and hunger for His Word more than you do for food.
Have you any other sins that haven’t been showcased on the news but you still bear before God? Do not bear them any longer! I’ve got good news - the cross of Christ has already paid for our injustices, if only we would have it.

Fourth, you should share the message of repentance-before-voting-for-lesser-evil with as many people as you have influence. It really is no different than proclaiming the blessed Gospel of God's Kingdom, because it naturally sprouts from it. Indeed, the amnesty granted by the Cross is our nation’s very hope of turning. It is like Jonah's message to Nineveh: though not the explicit Gospel of Christ, it was still God's timely Word to turn from evil. And do you know the great marvel of the Book of Jonah? Of all the miracles in the book, the greatest is that Nineveh actually repented at his simple message of repentance! Why should we ask God for less now?

Come, Let Us Return to the Lord!
Today, there are exactly 40 days until the election. I am literally suggesting that the “inevitable him or her” is not inevitable at all. “Him or her” is a false dilemma when God has given us a sweet window of opportunity to repent. I am asking you to join me by replacing all your time, energy, thought, and noise otherwise going into this election with humble prayers to God for mercy. Who knows? If we repent, God may be merciful by granting America a third option that hasn't yet appeared in the spotlight.

But whatever may come, know this: you do not have to align yourself with an evil candidate, and you should not. The only one worth the obsession and fanfare that all our media can generate is King Jesus. Siding with Him will never disappoint.

The Noble Character: A Tribute to Miss Jane - Part 7, At Last.

This is a tribute to my dear friend Miss Jane. You can read Part 1 here, and all the other parts follow. 

Now that she is gone I’ve discovered something shocking: I struggle to remember the stories she recited over and over again. It’s not because I didn’t hear them enough times. She kept a couple dozen old stories polished and ready to show off to all her friends, and many of us knew them so well we could finish her sentences. But thinking about those unwritten stories now is like trying to recall the details of a dream. It’s like if someone had asked me to tell about my vacation to the mountains and then added, “Please don’t use any verbs when you talk about the hiking.” All I would have left are impressions. I’m finding that so true now: it is easier, now she’s gone, to tell you I respected her than to tell about the last time she took Mary and I out for ice cream. 

Even so, here at the last of my tribute to my friend, I’d like to try to put into words a rather elusive quality about this charming old woman. 

She was happily odd everywhere she went, but you couldn’t imagine a scene without her.

She disapproved of dice playing, but still attended Ladies’ Bunco Night.

She was rigidly formal about everything, yet casual enough to go out in public wearing her pea green pajama shorts and over-sized t-shirts from ‘90’s church events.

She wouldn’t stoop to call Grant’s guitar a musical instrument, or that his worship band even played real songs, but she never missed an opportunity to join his band with her organ (often inviting herself), as though the Tortoise and the Hare got handcuffed together.

She believed in progress but resisted technology; every time I saw her use a cell phone, she would shout into it like a can on a string.

She treated the internet with the ritual and detachment of an enemy during ceasefire, like when she would call me and ask things like, “Young man, would you please ask The Internet a question for me? I would like to inquire if It knows the exact date and starting time of this year’s Christmas Cantata downtown. I’ll wait.”

She made waves everywhere she went, yet she tried her best to exude the calm of an un-rocked boat.

She was of a different substance than the world around her.

I’ve seen a phenomenon that will help me describe this. Imagine a single tree out in the country on the edge of an old hay field. Around the field is an old barbed wire fence, and the tree has grown into and absorbed the fence so that they’re stuck together for good. She was the old tree, and all the world around her was that rusty old wire. The two elements are alien to each other, but neither can escape the other ever again. Yet their union has created a new and better beauty, tragic but complete, so that they mean more together than they would ever have meant apart. Indeed, to divorce them would ruin them both. Miss Jane was like that. The entire modern world intruded her space daily, and she walked with ancient friction against anything that wasn’t doing what it should be doing. But the tension itself made her all the more alluring to those who called her friend. She was a chunk of salt, and the world became far blander when she left it.

The last time I saw Miss Jane was December 21, 2013, almost 6 years to the day we first ate lunch together at Big Bob’s. I drove my moving rig to her Sunset Manor Senior High-rise to sit down with her one last time before leaving Decatur. It was a tender parting: we spoke of the Church, we mused of Heaven, I told her the route I planned to take to Florida, and how long I expected to be on the road. She smiled the whole time, and said very little. And then I left. I think we both knew it would be our last sight of each other until the Resurrection.

Shortly after New Year she suffered another dose of bad health which landed her back in the hospital, and then back into the nursing home. We spoke by phone just a few times after I left, and each time we spoke she was in great pain. She would ask me, as I’m sure she asked everybody why the Lord wouldn’t just take her Home. Oh my, how she longed for Home, and she prayed for it with begging.

That prayer was finally answered March 15, 2014 while she was at the nursing home. I’m told the nurses were a little surprised it happened the day it did, because she had seemed cheery and talkative that morning, and they said she was sitting up in bed and eating breakfast with some energy. They expected she was on the rebound. Then after breakfast, she simply requested to recline for a late morning nap, and then she was gone in her sleep. Why did she pass on the day she seemed not to be in pain? Well, I’d like to offer an interpretation of her last events. She often told us that Jesus came and stood at her feet on painful nights, speaking comfort and patience to her, gently holding her socks. I suspect He may have been with her the night before, and perhaps whispered a clue that she’d be coming Home in the morning.

So I think that’s why she met her last day with repose and a little glee. That final breakfast of nursing home eggs and oatmeal was received with the appetite of a bride at her wedding banquet. She savored the toast like the sacramental Body of Christ, and she sipped the orange juice like Wine. Her hospital bed was the royal litter borne by the angels of God, and, knowing her, I think she realized all these things that morning. She was usually happiest when she felt she had a good secret. And I know she didn’t mind the ratty hospital gown, because she was already robed in the Righteousness of Christ, which was the only Garment that ever meant anything to her in the first place. Thus, ushered into the halls of Heaven, she was, at last, perfectly satisfied in Jesus of Nazareth, who is the Christ, Miss Jane’s Lord and Savior.

She was, in a word, herself.

The Noble Character: A Tribute to Miss Jane - Part 6, Olders and Elders


This is a tribute to my dear friend Miss Jane. I’d like to tell you about her because, by God’s grace, she didn’t waste her life, and that’s probably the highest compliment any of us could ever hope to receive from anyone. This is partly about some of the events and people of her life, but more than that it is also about some of the things she taught me and how she influenced me, to the Glory of God. Thus, in reading about her un-wasted life, may you receive God’s grace to make the best use of yours.


Miss Jane was a magnolia blossom: bold, luminous, and fragrant. Your first encounter with her was distinct and unforgettable, yet you could never quite figure her out no matter how long you knew her. Thus I never wearied of her. She brimmed with common sense, always with the desire to nourish you. Honestly, her wholesome, coherent worldview is puzzling to my generation who approach the world by our desires instead of by its design. To her, any deviation from using things by their design was non-sensical. When Mary put that normal BBQ sauce on her chicken, she might as well have asked for a hammer to butter her bread because, to Miss Jane, sure it was possible, but it worked against the design.

That first meal paved the way to a real friendship of mutual delight. Mary and I had many more meals with her after that – at Big Bob’s and elsewhere – and every date increased our delight in her eccentricity. 

I’ve had many other friendships with many other elders. Perhaps some of you younger people will understand when I say this: I’ve often faked it with older people. Acting like I’m better-behaved than I really am, laughing at jokes that aren’t funny, keeping the answers simple lest my real opinions expose my real faults. Watching the clock, looking for an exit, and never really enjoying the other person. You’ve probably done that too; most young people do. You elders reading this probably did it when you were young.

Yet in a very short time of knowing Miss Jane, we learned the difference between someone who is an elder and someone who is an older. (I don’t at all mean a Church Elder as Paul or Peter describe, that’s something totally different; I mean elder as in elderly, as described in Leviticus 19:32, and Psalm 71:18, and Proverbs 16:31.) She was one of the amazing people who helped us distinguish between olders and elders.

An older expects to be served simply on the basis of their age. Whether it’s a 5 year old or a 15 year old or a 45 year old or a 95 year old, olders vaunt their status simply because they are older. It all just comes down to dominance. 

On the other hand, an elder leads, which, of course, means they serve. It is a manifold servanthood, because they’ve given it a life of practice. They create an environment of freedom and candor wherever they go. They prove that old wisdom tastes better than young naivety, as wine is better than a pixie stick. Therefore they have no need to condescend the young. They are unequivocally un-threatened and unimpressed by boasting of any kind. They demonstrate that being more truthful never requires you to be less respectful. They keep a single, constant, silent prayer to God all the time, often asking Him for wisdom to share with those who hunger for it. 

I think, perhaps, some people really did consider Miss Jane as nothing more than an older. Anyone who regarded her as just an older will never know what they missed, like winning a vacation in the Alps only to oversleep when the boat leaves. What a loss! To us, though, she was our beloved elder: unembarrassed of her individuality and ours; feeding us a steady flow of encouragement and rebuke as fit the need. 

She constantly served us, even when she could no longer move very well. Looking back on some of the harder times, the hospital times and the late-night times and the dying times, I had faced those hours with the assumption that she could really use someone younger by her side, getting her water, quoting Scripture, praying, fetching a needed item here and there from her apartment. I had aspired to be, you know, her servant, just like our Lord Jesus. Many of you reading this spent far more time serving her than I did.

But of course, now that she’s gone, I realize that a big reason she really kept guys like me around is because she wanted to render us the same favor.

The Noble Character: A Tribute to Miss Jane - Part 5, Elder Years (Part 2), Me and Miss Jane

This is a tribute to my dear friend Miss Jane. I’d like to tell you about her because, by God’s grace, she didn’t waste her life, and that’s probably the highest compliment any of us could ever hope to receive from anyone. This is partly about some of the events and people of her life, but more than that it is also about some of the things she taught me and how she influenced me, to the Glory of God. Thus, in reading about her un-wasted life, may you receive God’s grace to make the best use of yours.


I met Miss Jane 6 years and 3 months before she died, and I’d like to think I got to know her very well.

My wife and I had only been married two years when we moved from Oklahoma City to be youth pastors for a small church in Decatur, AL. On our first Sunday, we were both nervous and probably a little too shy. Miss Jane wasted no time starting the conversation with us after the worship service. (She loved to take initiative like that.) She cordially invited us to Big Bob Gibson’s Barbeque, one of the Crown Jewels of Decatur. According to Miss Jane, if we were to have a proper introduction to Southern-style-cuisine and culture, then Big Bob’s Barbeque was to be the cuisine, and Miss Jane was the culture.

She picked us up the following Tuesday in her white, egg-shaped, 3-door hatchback Hyundai Accent. It was a car wholly consecrated to the work of God, which she made immediately clear. Before going to the restaurant she drove us all over Decatur like a tour guide, instructing us better than anyone else could about the oldness of Decatur, the points of interest, and the unfortunate factors that prevented it from becoming the Chicago of the South.

Finally we pulled into a crowded parking lot with a big red and green neon sign that had a picture of a pig wearing a chef’s outfit and holding a knife. The sign read, ‘ “Big Bob” Gibson Bar-B-Q.’ I was already in love. It was the kind of place that, if you’re just visiting and you ask the locals for a restaurant that gives you the feel of the town, they’ll tell you “Big Bob’s.”

We entered a packed dining room at lunchtime on a workday, yet no one seemed to be in a hurry. The tables were all too close together so that waitresses had to turn sideways to walk between chairs. There were barbecue awards and statues of pigs everywhere, just everywhere, especially decorating the front cash register. A couple of the statues were of a pig standing at a grill wearing a chef’s hat and cooking, you know, pig.

To the far left corner was an office door with a big window, closed yet conspicuous. The office was the size of a large closet. A white-haired man sat at a desk in that closet, pecking a calculator and scribbling in a book. Looking back to the right, the dining room was a big square. Across the far opposite corner of the dining room was the steamy kitchen window where the waitresses would land like bumblebees then fly away with their plates. To the right of the service window was a glass-doored fridge holding all sorts of pie ready for digestion. On the walls between the kitchen and the office were framed newspaper write-ups, plaques, trophies, and more pictures of pigs, all to prove that this dining room stays packed for a good reason. I knew right away this was how Big Bob’s was supposed to look, a small-town staple. But to be honest, Miss Jane didn’t quite fit.

She was, it seemed to me, too classy for the place. 

Our hostess chewed gum like a bored cow as she led us to our booth. Miss Jane followed bold as a mare, proud to show off her hometown’s BBQ-namesake. Miss Jane was a paradox from the start. As we chatted over our water we learned that she had seen the world, yet here she was in Smallville, AL treating Big Bob’s with the prestige of a Paris bistro. She spoke with such great elocution and propriety that I literally asked her if she was British. She humbly giggled and clarified that she was raised in Decatur but had lived for many years in (here she over-pronounced it), “AND-er-son, IN-di-AN-a.” Anderson, in her opinion, produced a more refined and elegant people than London ever could.

Then came the foundational moment of our friendship with Miss Jane, the initial event that would forever make me cherish and understand her with mirth and respect.

For the Chicken.
My wife received her chicken sandwich from the waitress, then proceeded to grab regular ol’ red BBQ sauce to pour over her food. Miss Jane stopped her as she opened the bottle and kindly offered The White Sauce, made especially for chicken. She addressed Mary with the courtesy of a diplomat who needs to help a foreigner understand an unbreakable cultural rule, explaining that The White Sauce was the only sauce made especially for chicken. Then Miss Jane apologized on behalf of the generation that grew up with Mr. Gibson’s original The White Sauce recipe because, unfortunately, they’ve never quite got it right after he passed. Those people old enough to have tasted The Original had to live with the burden of an inferior product. Even so, The White Sauce was for the chicken. She held it across the table for Mary and grinned as though she had stopped Mary from doing something regrettable. Mary looked at the bottle of The White Sauce, then back to the regular BBQ sauce in her own hand, then back to Miss Jane, and shyly declined. She stared at Mary in disbelief. Miss Jane’s smile fell, but the outstretched bottle of The White Sauce did not. It was then that Mary realized Miss Jane was not recommending, she was instructing. As a world traveler Miss Jane was familiar with awkward cultural situations, so she re-explained in case Mary didn’t understand the first time, “My dear, this is The White Sauce, which is made especially for the chicken. If you order chicken, The White Sauce is what you use.” Miss Jane blinked politely. Mary looked back at the bottle to better evaluate the gravity of the situation. Miss Jane’s gaze was fixed, and her lips parted slightly. Mary’s right hand still held the bun ready for red-BBQ-sauce application. Then Mary’s left hand proceeded to shake out sweet red BBQ sauce onto her chicken sandwich and said timidly, “Oh thanks, Miss Jane, but I’d just rather have normal BBQ sauce.” Miss Jane’s eyebrows raised and she began to blink a lot. It took her a whole 5, maybe 8 seconds to bend her elbow and replace the bottle in the condiment rack. She shrugged her shoulders a couple times and her neck twitched subtly. And as she put the bottle back she said with a surprised tone, “Well I suppose you can use any sauce you like, but The White Sauce is for the chicken.” And all I could do was grin and chuckle as my wife chewed with lowered eyes, waiting for me to change the subject.

I do think this story is funny, but please don’t take it as unflattering. You should not hear it as a cheap kind of sitcom-funny. This was just the first of many stories pointing to the deeper, more godly humor that tells you something good and satisfying about reality. It is not because Miss Jane was wrong about The White Sauce, but because she never felt the need to shield anyone from her quirks. From the beginning, Miss Jane showed us that truth is always packaged in a personality. She was abruptly eccentric, which made it impossible for Mary to hide her own subtle eccentricities and particular tastes. Nobody had anywhere to hide with Miss Jane because she would not hide herself from anybody.

Thus, even in that first unforgettable luncheon, she removed from us any temptation to pretend, as so many of us often do. Her simple lesson that day: love can flourish where personality is nourished.

The Noble Character: A Tribute to Miss Jane - Part 5, Elder Years (Part 1), Ken and Jane

This is a tribute to my dear friend Miss Jane. I’d like to tell you about her because, by God’s grace, she didn’t waste her life, and that’s probably the highest compliment any of us could ever hope to receive from anyone. This is partly about some of the events and people of her life, but more than that it is also about some of the things she taught me and how she influenced me, to the Glory of God. Thus, in reading about her un-wasted life, may you receive God’s grace to make the best use of yours.


I met Miss Jane when she was elderly, already in her late 70’s. I think meeting someone when they’re old may be one of the best times to get to know them, mainly because, in a person’s final decade, the mass of their beliefs and actions have gathered and pooled into their mouths. Their mouths must supplement what their arms and hands and legs can no longer do. So for many older people, you have to sit still and listen if you really want anything to do with them. If you get the privilege of listening to elders in whom the Spirit and Word of God dwell, their speaking is equally helpful to the Body of Christ as their doing. This type of speaking is called wisdom, and it’s from God. If you have some then you’re obligated to share it with the rest of us.

Another benefit of getting to know a person after they’re already aged is that you get to see them go through a sort of proofing stage of life. By proofing stage I mean that elders discover (if they didn’t already know) whether all their choices were really worth what they paid for them. Their successes and regrets hang on their shoulders like a shawl they knit through the decades and no longer have the strength to remove. If they didn’t spend their young strength well, then at the end they’ll have time to ponder what they could have done better. This is a special brand of wisdom we call experience. If you meet an elder willing to tell their experiences, then listen closely; their regret could very well ensure your success. 

If you meet an elder willing to teach you their wisdom and experiences with the Holy Scriptures, then take this person to lunch as often as possible.

The benefit of getting to know Miss Jane when she was already an elder is that she was ripe with all three of these: wisdom, experience, and Scripture. She would gladly go out of her way to speak generously about her experiences, and God’s wisdom, and the Scriptures. More than generously – profusely for anyone who would listen (and even to some people who would never listen).

It was in this way – the listening way – that those of us privileged enough to belong to 6th Avenue Church of God during Miss Jane’s last years became endeared to her, and got to know her very well. Her last few years folded her body like a paper bag, but her tongue kept its wits. She loved her church with the neatness of a mother wiping her child’s face with a licked handkerchief. She also loved her church with the grim strength of a Secret Service agent guarding the President. Except for a couple lapses of sickness which made her forget herself temporarily, her mind stayed sharp enough to stand her ground with a sword if she felt anyone tampering with her church. She absolutely loved to stand her ground! She was brave like that.

In the last few years of her best health, she stood her ground alongside a young pastor who was also very brave. Like Miss Jane, Ken was also full of wisdom, experience, and Scripture. He wasn’t afraid to grow his hair long and even less afraid of old churches and old people. Pastor Ken Oldham was a servant-shepherd to the elderly of his church. He always walked in the same tender, patient stride forward, always forward, like Moses on his way to Canaan. Ken was one of those happy pastors who seemed to enjoy the Church in full view of her flaws, rather than merely tolerating the Church despite her flaws. And he really enjoyed Miss Jane. His compassion was the perfect foil to some of her orneriness. He got to know her very well because his ears stayed wide to her wisdom, experiences, and knowledge of the Scripture.

As with most churches, 6th Avenue naturally adopted the posture of their pastor. When Ken cherished the old saints, some of the young members of the church showed up for the Seniors Club. When Ken embraced the poor, the church began to serve more outside its own four walls. When Ken played games with the youth, the whole church became more jovial. And when Ken made space for drums and guitars for worship, Miss Jane stood her ground by the organ. But Ken had offered something far more resonant and irresistible to Miss Jane than all the organs and guitars and drums of the world: Faithfulness.

Thus he earned Miss Jane’s trust and got to know her very well. Naturally, 6th Avenue followed warmly.

The wonder of it all was the unity between Ken and Jane. In some ways they were total opposites; their differences were obvious and not surprising. But it is very surprising and marvelous that they both embodied God’s indivisible wisdom. Ken’s wisdom was often in his ears, Miss Jane’s was often in her mouth, but they each had it firmly by the hand. They would disagree, but they would never disavow one another. This mutual faithfulness proved them wiser because of their differences. They were two acute angles who, while individually very sharp, together formed a sturdy right angle that could support a shaky wall. In this way, they both built up – and sometimes held up – their dear church. 

Think of that carefully with me for just a moment. The church thrived when Ken and Miss Jane were unlike each other. They were as different as the ox from the plow, whose differences are the very guarantee of good things to come. Better still, their differences showcased the unbreakable unity of the paradoxes of God’s wisdom. Consider the wisdom God revealed in creating the world. Every grain of sand numbered. Every drop of water in its place. Every tree’s seed according to its kind. Yet as inimitable as He made our Earth, God surpassed the display of His own wisdom in Creation when He displayed His glory in the Church, because in the Church He forged together more extreme opposites than in Creation.

Creation is universally beautiful because it is made of extremely unlike things – say, water and rock and air and light – which are all brought together into the breathtaking landscape of a sunset over a mountain lake. It is unspeakably and undeniably gorgeous. The only proper response is glad worship. Yet even more undeniably beautiful is the Body Christ formed of such opposites as Jew and Gentile, black and white, eye and ear, Ken and Jane. It is more beautiful because their union is more unlikely than the union of water and rock and air and light on a sunset over a mountain lake. 

Therefore, the union of the Church is more inexplicable than the union of Earth’s elements; in other words, the only explanation for their friendship is that God brought them together to make His glory obvious. Therefore the Church – from every tribe and language and nation and people – is more miraculous than our own planet. Therefore, it reflects its creator God with better precision. Therefore, highest of all, God ordained the Church to inspire richer worship than do all the other glories of Creation. Therefore, lowest of all, the enemies of God are more zealous to destroy the Church’s unity than they are to destroy the other glories of Creation. Therefore we who knew them well know the twisted minds that tried to tempt Miss Jane to undermine her pastor and leave the Church

Therefore, no less than our Lord Jesus Himself prayed for Pastor Ken and Miss Jane to be one, even as He was One with His Father. To the glory of our Lord Jesus, that prayer was answered in Ken and Jane. And it is answered gloriously for everyone who yearns for the holy purity of His Church.

Not surprising then that both Pastor Ken and Miss Jane were essential in teaching me how to worship the One True God. These two people symbolized and displayed for me the miracle of reconciliation that God has done in Christ. Under the cross, millions of people who would have otherwise been enemies gather to praise the crucified and risen Lamb of God. His beauty is far too brilliant to be represented by one individual’s gifts. He makes His glory obvious and sweet because of – not in spite of or in addition to – the paradoxical qualities of all His servants.

Therefore, Miss Jane wisely taught me to pity and pray for those Christians who would be owned by Christ but who disown His Church. They have shunned the Lamb’s beautiful Bride. It carries the same disgrace of turning your back as the bride walks the aisle. How much greater the disgrace when we turn our backs to the Bride of Christ? It is like water without moisture; it is like beauty without due praise. It is claiming to love Jesus while tearing down His Church, and it is insufferable nonsense. 

But just think now with me how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity, when Christians unify in truth! It is the very oil of the Priest’s anointing; it is the very moisture of the mountains. For there, the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore (Ps 133).

It is the benefit of a young person sitting at the feet of a talkative elder.

The Noble Character: A Tribute to Miss Jane - Part 4, Music.

This is a tribute to my dear friend Miss Jane. I’d like to tell you about her because, by God’s grace, she didn’t waste her life, and that’s probably the highest compliment any of us could ever hope to receive from anyone. This is partly about some of the events and people of her life, but more than that it is also about some of the things she taught me and how she influenced me, to the Glory of God. Thus, in reading about her un-wasted life, may you receive God’s grace to make the best use of yours.


During her decades as a travel agent and small business owner, the entire earth changed its orbit and started spinning in reverse. The amazing technologies of the 1900’s didn’t merely innovate travel, commerce, and leisure; these technologies established innovation itself as the new paradigm. Here we see another odd paradox for the giants of her generation: the innovations that made them powerful became more powerful than their inventors and swallowed them whole, like what might happen if a goldfish could birth a shark. The men and women who first mastered their creations could not have fathomed the implications their inventions would have on their grandchildren.

This is even more ironic when we consider those novel little companies whose very business drives them out of business. Consider the success of the great newspaper moguls of the early century whose empires were eventually driven out of business by the Internet for which they paved the way. They didn’t just offer information to the masses; they offered need of information. The Internet was born for the very purpose of supporting the speed and volume of information the newspapers instigated. Ironically, as we all know, our headline-lust has been helping drive paper-based news out of its own business. They’ve lost at their own game.

This is just one example of innovation-domination. On a long enough timeline, their success is the same thing as their demise. Miss Jane’s travel agency benefited from this type of success. She could not have foreseen that every travel destination she booked was helping make her business a bit more obsolete; she shrank the globe one customer at a time. Thus her occupation helped advance the world of travel while the job itself remained motionless. I like to imagine that her little office must have been a major pivot point for many great inventions and ideas, because, after all, Miss Jane was rich with many great connections and stories. Her travel agency was like the pivot foot of a basketball player – because the foot stays planted, the rest of the body is allowed to make giant turns around it. Miss Jane delighted in being the hub of all important movements while she stayed planted. That’s not to say she was a sloth – far from it, you will never meet anyone more active than she was. Rather, despite these baffling changes all around her, it never occurred to her to try outrunning her ancestors. For years, week in and week out, her life kept a happy rhythm, which she humbly counted as the measured pace of every servant of Jesus.

Let us pause here to wonder and pray about our individual roles in these historical shifts – these titanic changes. Let us not take for granted that all these changes are a benefit. Indeed, they are not all beneficial. For many of you reading this, your success with these innovations might well be the same as your demise. It is sobering how drastically the world has changed from the time of Miss Jane’s birth till her death: the technology, the political earthquakes, the reincarnation of old ideas; the shift from the Church occupying the center of all social activity, yet forfeiting it to a network of computer screens where everyone is “connected” without being in the same room. The 1900’s advanced so rapidly that it is as if the very story of human history saw its finish line and tried to outrun its own people to the end. In fast times like these, Miss Jane often went against the grain, believing it important to heed the old Wisdom of slow feet. (Please, dear reader, I want to help you see these things in their complexity to really help you understand the complexity of this dear lady.) Consider that, through all these changes, Miss Jane could speak intelligently about every current event. She stayed active in politics both locally and nationally, and she kept a thriving small-business in a college town with good relationship to young clientele. Yet she hardly ever saw a movie in her entire life. She refused to believe a computer was good for anything except flying rockets to the moon (and that may not be worth much either). And, most poignant of all, she would not stoop to call anything “music” which didn’t receive its blood and bones from fathers like Beethoven, Bach, or Handel. Everything in the world was evolving to handle the speed and change encouraged by her travel agency; yet her own roots were deep, and slow, and ancient. Hers was the tree’s life when all the world had gone to weeds. 

Nothing better represents this contrast than Music. She loved her music, and it was old. More than old: it was Immortal. Her music belonged to that ancient class of wild, mysterious objects that can’t be changed by the generations – like mountains, or oceans, or stars. If her music was unchangeable, it’s because she believed it held as much mass and meaning as a mountain or an ocean or a star. It is not there to behold you; you are there to behold it. And it will scoff at your passing long after you’re dead and can no longer behold anything. Hers was so unlike the music of my generation, which usually has only enough mass to last about a decade. After that our music usually becomes a joke, something for the next decade of teenagers to mock. There was a time in my youth when other people’s music was my favorite joke (much like the way a new crop of weeds dominates another). It is the type of joke that invented the term “generation gap.” Since the 1950’s, each new generation of teens has weaponized their music to suppress and kill the previous generation’s music, making it impossible for a people to unite under a common tune. Innovation, it turns out, makes an equally cruel lord to music as it does to business. 

When this regrettable music divide happened in the Church, it fell with the violence of a divorce. We called it “Worship Wars,” and you know what I’m talking about. I’d like here to confess – as a representative of my generation, the generation borne of the wealthiest Church in world history and the Christian music boom of the 1980’s and ‘90’s – that even in my deepest sympathies toward hymnals and organs and all the classics, I wished earnestly to destroy it, or worse, to forget it. I didn’t care if the earth was wiped of its memory, as long as my side of music won the game. I think back now on some of the first “contemporary songs” that began to supplant the old songs, and we don’t sing them anymore. They’re a shameless self-joke, the yearbook picture of a pubescent boy doing his best to look tough. More than that, they’re a mistake; just consider how each “contemporary song” from just a few years ago is now called “old” and gets groans and protests whenever the tune is re-played. Just imagine that: a 4 year old song supplanting a 400 year old song, then destroying itself by the same mechanism it used to win the silly game it invented. How embarrassing. The Church’s Worship Wars were a fool’s quest. It is like ripping out your vegetable garden to plant rye grass, then complaining of a sore appetite. It is like demanding your grandfather’s inheritance before he’s dead. It is like selling your birthright for a bowl of stew. And we’ve literally applauded it.

But Miss Jane protested it. 

Yet she didn’t walk away from her church, even when she felt they walked away from her music.

At last, here it is. We’ve reached the tender nerve. Even now, it is a hard thing to expose without defensiveness from some, and attacks from others. Nonetheless, there she sits at her organ, stubborn as a gargoyle but soft as a willow, playing the songs she wished we loved. It is the thing I’ve come to admire most about her: equal faithfulness to the “old” music and to the “young” church. She never missed an opportunity to give us an earful about how we should play the hymns (“And please, without that dreadful guitar! You could make better music with a freight train!”), but the point is she was there to say it. She did not leave, though a flood of temptation tried to sweep her away. Miss Jane did not leave.

Dear reader, do take a moment here with me, and let’s humble ourselves together. Let’s sit one last time at the feet of an elder with whom we ardently disagreed, yet who never left our side. Let’s pass under her argument once more to test whether it holds any truth. And if it does, let’s believe it.

It seems to me that music is the audible soul of a culture. Miss Jane ached to impart a culture rich with heritage and lineage to young brats like me. She felt as close to her music as to her last name, because they’re both current and ancient. Her music gave her the same kind of stability as a good family name. How fitting then that she sang the songs in her last year that she had learned in her first. If you’re like me, you’ve switched music styles a dozen times since childhood, not unlike changing your name to make yourself more “unique;” not unlike getting a nose job because the eyes of other people are more important to you than your own dear face. Indeed, when your music is as ancient and sacred as a mountain, it will compose you. And, I now believe, that what she really wanted to ensure as she sat at her organ and pleaded the hymns was something less tangible but more essential than I ever stopped to receive: undying delight in knowing exactly who you are in Christ.

Thus, even when she couldn’t affect the music culture of her church, Miss Jane passed on to me (and I pray now, dear reader, to you) the immortal spirit of faithfulness to the Church – the Bride of Christ – that her music embodied. 

Faithfulness, after all, makes a music all its own, and it is the only fitting overture for the Wedding Day of the Lamb

The Noble Character: A Tribute to Miss Jane - Part 3, The Travel Agency.

This is a tribute to my dear friend Miss Jane. I’d like to tell you about her because, by God’s grace, she didn’t waste her life, and that’s probably the highest compliment any of us could ever hope to receive from anyone. This is partly about some of the events and people of her life, but more than that it is also about some of the things she taught me and how she influenced me, to the Glory of God. Thus, in reading about her un-wasted life, may you receive God’s grace to make the best use of yours. 


For decades after college, Miss Jane lived a good life, the life she had been raised for. The bulk of these years were spent as a business partner in a successful travel agency. She bought 50 percent of the company with Dr. Adam Miller, an American World War II veteran who spoke Japanese and helped interpret for the signing of the armistice that ended the War. 

I’ll give a word about Dr. Miller’s character: Miss Jane could not have worked so long with just any old chump; her standards would have required her business partner to be a gentleman. She just wouldn’t have put up with it any other way. He was proper, and, naturally, she respected that about him. He had a few mannerly quirks that she even made fun of a few times, but she still admired him. For example, if ever the two of them had to drive somewhere together by themselves, he would always make her drive while he sat in the back seat, just to avoid any question of his integrity to his wife or anyone else. Dr. Miller was an accomplished historical theologian in his own right and had even written a book on Church history. Miss Jane always acted surprised whenever I would remind her that I didn’t use his book in any of my college classes. She would say things like, “No one could possibly know what they’re really talking about on Biblical history unless they knew what Dr. Adam Miller said on such-and-such a subject.” This was her admiration for her business partner.

She loved the travel agency – the charm and the research it required, the regular customers, remembering names, finding bargains, sharing mutual travel stories, and booking a celebrity from time to time. (By the way, Miss Jane used an advanced paradigm to determine celebrity. Our culture evaluates celebrity by how many people know about a certain person; Miss Jane evaluated it by how much a person deserved to be known. Ours is based on marketability; hers was by remarkability. You may laugh because she had never heard of Katy Perry, but she’d laugh at you because you don’t know your own mayor. Thus, she was always talking about unknown people as though you were the one with your head in the sand. And she was right.) The travel agency gave her that deep, abiding satisfaction that fewer and fewer of my generation experience: she loved her job.

It was in working with that business partner, in that town, with that type of business, that Miss Jane built a small fortune and traveled the globe. Almost every continent. Multiple countries within each continent. She toured this planet with zeal, as if to familiarize herself with her Christian inheritance. Just think of that for a moment; I hope it stuns you. God granted world travel to this dirt-poor, Depression-born, only-child-of-her-mother little girl from Alabama. By the time I had met her, she had seen things I haven’t yet read about. She would mention these travels every chance she got. Her stories were frank, yet she could never quite conceal her delight in bringing them up. It is, perhaps, like how I imagine the children of some mega-celebrity would try to blend in in public, “Oh yeah, I was at the game when Michael Jordan won his sixth championship. He happens to be my dad, so...ya know.” She would often hunt for people’s travel stories in conversation – searching for the shared landmarks, the cultural oddities, the local dishes that only people who had been to that corner market could have tasted and all the places fellow travelers also held sacred.

As one of her church’s pastors while she was in her 80’s, I saw this scene unfold several times, and I was always quite in awe of it: her aging frame would frequently land her in the hospital, and I’d get to sit with her in an ER hallway as she’d tell foreign doctors about her travels in their home countries. We all knew she was showing off, and we loved it, nobody minded. Many nurses and doctors listened intently as if to learn. Some simply patronized her with a bubble-gum-type of interest whose sweetness wore out just as soon as it began. Others were clearly distracted with the million other things nurses have on their minds. Then there were some nurses and doctors, aside from distraction, who were clearly dismissive and apathetic to her relentless charm. And as I reflect on it all, I’m amazed – it’s shocking when you think about it – that all your best adventures will soon be treated like checkmarks on some nurse’s clipboard.  Not all nurses, but some nurses. He’ll let you ramble about the old days while he’s more in tune with the numerical biology of your vital signs than with you. She’ll treat your proudest moments with the same malaise that she checks your urine bag. You. It is coming, and it is close. Your face will shrivel and your joints will fail, but worst of all, your stories will be uncherished; your words will be simply tolerated by some young person rushing in to the same old destiny.

You might never let yourself think of this reality, but you know you know it. And when it overtakes you, when your stories give way to silence, when there is no more audience, only one question will matter: Who? Who saw your tales unfold, and who will hear them now? Who accompanied every journey? If the only people who would be interested because they lived out your times with you are dead, and all the young people who owe you an ear don’t care, then to whom will you turn? It is the question everyone always cares about at the End. But this haunting question has a great solace if we add just a single, triumphant word: For. For Whom? And such a bold question can be satisfied by only one gracious answer, the only One who has seen every human face perish from the face of the earth from Abel to you: the One Immortal, Invisible, only Wise God. The One for whose sake every day unfolded will be your best companion when your last day enfolds you. Miss Jane, even amid her ornery boasting and shameless name-dropping, really did live every day from, and to, and in, and for Jesus Christ. When death seized her like an owl’s claw and the Last Question demanded its final response, Miss Jane could reply with gentle repose, “Thee, my Lord. None but Thee.”

Perhaps, in view of these weighty things, we are ready for the ever-timely and ever-tender word of the Psalmist, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” (Ps 116:15)
