of course, the list of significant events was long, but 3 things caught my eye.
1) september 22 is usually (around) the first day of fall, known as the autumnal equinox, during which you can balance an egg upright on its end (try it!).
2) september 22, 1776, Nathan Hale, an american solder & spy during the Revolutionary War, was captured & hanged by british troops. onlookers remembered his famous last words, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." he had said this because, in his words, he was "so satisfied with the cause in which I have engaged," that it was worth more than life to him.
his purpose gave him courage - he had found something worth dying for.
and so he died free.
3) september 22, 1862 (86 years after Hale's execution), a preliminary version of the Emancipation Proclamation was released. this decree announced that slavery would be abolished on american soil, whether people liked it or not.
and because they had found something worth dying for, many lives were given to keep young-america united; many more were given to end slavery.
and so they lived free.
and now, hundreds of years later, we remember these events because on this day, true freedom was enjoyed.

do you see it? Christ calls us to lose our lives daily, because He is always Something-worth-dying-for; that's how we're Free. we don't need to wait for a War, or for a Cause, for a Law to be made or broken, or something Good, or something Bad before we're Free - because we're never more Free than when we're willing to lose ourselves daily for Him.
and that makes everyday something Historic.
